Notes |
- Of importance: John's father William Davies named his granddaughter "Penmimah, daughter of my son John Davis" in his last will and testament.
Probate Records:
John Davies, late of Caernarvon tp., 7 Mar 1772-7 Apr 1772
Wife Elizabeth Davis
Children: John, Elizabeth, Myrick, and Percnan
Executors: Elizabeth Davis, Thomas Parry, & Morris Henderson
The following records attest that John Davies acquired two tracts:
1. 400a Caernarvon tp. pat. 7 Jul 1758 to John Davis (Ref. PB A-19-294).
2. 234a Earl tp. pat. 14 Nov 1760 to John Davis (Ref. PB AA-2-213).
The following parcels are known to have been sold out of the 400A tract:
A. 30a, 6p to Christian Kurtz on 13 May 1769
B. 110a, 12p to Jacob Root on 24 May 1766
That left approximately 240A unaccounted for. Curiously, the 400A tract was war. 5 Apr 1758, surv. 6 6mo. 1758, and pat. 7 Jul 1758, all to John Davis. Based on the tract location, there must have been an earlier warrant and survey. YES--an early map of the Caernarvon settlement shows a survey dated 4 June 1719, with 424A surveyed to John Davis. His land lies next to or near that of William Davis.

Marriage to Peninah Davies: (1a,b) Peninnah. (2) John Davies of Caernarvon Twp., Lancaster Co., PA names daughter Peninah and William Mackey in his will dtd 27 Mar 1772. (11)
Death: (8) Guardians were appointed for children of William MACKEY 5 Sep 1775, York Co., PA. (NOTE: Not proved that this is the same William who married Peninah Davies. Only William found who had a daughter Mary.)
(5) The Mackey family was among the prominent settlers of the old manor of Springton, or Springtown, Wallace Twp., Chester Co., PA. (NOTE: Wallace Twp. was created from West Nantmeal Twp. in 1852.) The settlers on the 8313 acre manor were almost entirely Scotch-Irish. They did not get titles for the land for a long time, which caused considerable trouble. They claimed it was promised to them at the rate of 45 lbs. per 100 acres. In 1747, 10 of the principal settlers were ejected.
(6) 1741-1747: William Mackey (2), Nathan Evans, John Hanna and William Ewing taxed, West Nantmeal Twp., Chester Co., PA. (NOTE: West Nantmeal Twp. created 1740 from Nantmeal Twp.)
(5) 1753: William Mackey taxed twice in West Nantmeal Twp., Chester Co., PA. Also taxed were James Davison, John Moor, Daniel Moor Sr., Daniel Moor, John Hanna, Nathan Evans, James Moor, Daniel Henderson, John Jack, Lodowick Liget, George Dougherty (freeman), John Darlington. He is not in the list of landowners in 1774. Only Daniel, John and James Moore remain of the above list. In 1717-9 surveys were made on the head of the north branch of Brandywine for Daniel and John Moore, and on French Creek for William Davis, Nantmeal Twp.
(4) 1754, 7 Sep: Members of the Church of Bangor, Caernarvon Twp., Lancaster Co., PA promise to pay John Davis and Lynford Lardner the present Church Wardens before 16 Nov 1755, to be applied toward the building of a new church & other purposes the wardens & vestry agree upon. William Mackey pledged 2 lbs. 5. Also pledging were Myrick Davis and John, David, Gabriel, John (Fuller), John Jr., David, Zaccheus, Edward (Smith), and John (Earltown) Davis, and Nathan Evans.
(1a,b) 1762, 5 Feb: William Mackey was granted 219 acres in West Nantmeal Twp., Chester Co., PA.
(1a) 1762, 20 Apr: William Mackey of West Nantmeal Twp., Chester Co., PA, yeoman, and Peninnah his wife convey to Nathan Evans of Carnavan Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, millwright, 119 acres in West Nantmeal Twp., Chester Co., bounded by Mary Brown, Jacon Cloud, Elizabeth Ring, Mackey and Evan Jenkins, part of 219 acres granted to William Mackey by the proprietaries 5 Feb 1762, recorded in Patent Bk AA, Vol. 2, p.492. Witnessed by Gabriel Davis, Amos Jones.
(10) 1765: William Mackey taxed for 100 acres, 2 horses, 2 cattle, 6 sheep in West Nantmill Twp., Chester Co., PA. Also taxed were Daniel Henderson, Daniel Moore, John Jack, William McKey.
(1b) 1765, 25 May: William Mackey and Peninah his wife deed to James Graham 99.25 acres and 15 perches in West Nantmeal Twp., Chester Co., Pa, part of 219 acres granted to William Mackey by the proprietaties 5 Feb 1762. (NOTE: Assuming the original grant was for a full 219 acres, this deed would leave William Mackey with slightly less than 3/4 of an acre. It is most likely that the original survey was short by that amount, and he had now sold off the entire property. When James Graham sold the property in 1786, it was described as adjoining Matthew Buchannon's land. The maps show this tract to be just across the Caernarvon Twp., Lancaster Co. line.)
(10) 1766: William Mackey taxed for 160 acres, 2 horses, 2 cows, 6 sheep, West Nantmill Twp., Chester Co., PA.(NOTE: What would he be taxed for if he sold all his land? Same William Mackey?) Also taxed were Patrick Davison, James Hanna, Daniel Henderson, Charles and John Jack, Daniel Moore.
(10) 1769: William Mackey taxed for 100 acres, 2 horses, 3 cattle, West Nantmill Twp., Chester Co., PA. Also taxed were Daniel Henderson, James Kincade (shopkeeper), Daniel Moor.
(3) 1771, 6 Dec: William Megee and Benjamin Cunningham are taxed in Fawn Twp., York Co., PA.

(8) 1775, 5 Sep: Mary Mackey, aged near 18 years, daughter of William Mackey of Fawn Twp., York Co., PA, dec'd, chose Benjamin Cunningham of Fawn Twp. guardian, York Co. Orphan's Court. John Mackey, aged 15 years and upwards, son of William Mackey of Fawn Twp., dec'd, chose William Smiley of Fawn Twp. guardian. Abraham Mackey and William (Mortherd?), Administrators of the estate of William Mackey, late of Fawn Twp., dec'd, asked the court to appoint a guardian for Catherine, William, Abraham and Thomas Mackey, the minor orphans of William, whereupon the court appointed Edward Manifold of Fawn Twp. guardian. (9) 1778, 27 Aug: Abraham Mackey, acting administrator of the estate of William Mackey, late of Fawn Twp. at the time of his death, produced an accounting of the estate in York Co., PA Orphan's Court. The balance was 84 lbs., 11 shillings, 11 pence, which was ordered to be distributed.
